I'm hoping that DVDAfterEdit Mastering Edition might be able to solve this problem - it looks like it can but I want to make sure. Here's the situation:
I'm trying to figure out how to create a DLT (actually a pair of DLTs) from a DVD-9 disc. I was given a DVD-9 with macrovision on it that needed to be removed. No one had access to any of the original files so re-creating the project was out of the question. However, I was able to remove the macrovision and create a new Video TS file that worked fine. From the Video TS file I was able to create a .img file that I used to burn a new DVD-9 master. The disc works great. My problem starts when I tried to create a new set of DLT masters. Hopefully, DVDAfterEdit is the solution. It looks like I would need to get the Mastering Edition. Is this correct?
Thanks in advance.
Your only choices
Hi GWG,
The problem with DVD Studio Pro is that it expects to burn only projects that it has created in their entirety. So it is a self-consistent process, and does not work with just any old VIDEO_TS folder, it expects to find the layout information that it would have put there. So as far as it is concerned, the VIDEO_TS folder is just a way so you can try out playing the DVD with the player before actually burning a DVD, or creating a DDP image on DLT or hard drive.
So the ONLY way you can create a DLT from your new VIDEO_TS folder is with DVDAfterEdit Mastering Edition, or with Gear Pro on the PC. As part of this process, you will designate where the layer break should be. In DVDAE, you will be able to see all the possible layer break points, view the video, and choose the one you want. In Gear, you must do it all by specifying sector numbers in the dark.
The upgrade from DVDAfterEdit to DVDAfterEdit Mastering Edition is $995.

Thanks for the responses.
Thanks for the responses. As I continue to look over all my options I came up with two more questions:
I already have the capability of burning DLT tapes through DVD Studio Pro. The problem on this project was that once I had created a Video_TS file that was macrovision-free I attempted to burn the DLTs through Studio Pro by pointing to the compile folder of the project. Studio Pro said the layout file was missing that contained the break point and couldn't burn the DLT. Given this situation would I be better off just purchasing DVD AfterEdit and creating an altered Video_TS file and then burning a DLT through Studio Pro of that or is it necessary for me to purchase the Mastering Edition to get this job done?
Also, I haven't read if there is the option to upgrade from regular AfterEdit to the Mastering edition? Is this possibile and if so, how much does it cost to upgrade?
Thanks again to everyone who has helped answer my questions. I really appreciate the help as I consider making this software investment.
Hi GWG, Have you seen this
Hi GWG,
Have you seen this page from the site ?
http://www.dvdafteredit.com/?q=node/82
Most of the users here ( myself included ) use dvdAE to write DLTs all the time, it works extremely well ! It has certain unique possibilities, like the ability to set your layer-break precisely. To be clear, it won't enable you to read a copy-pretected DVD, but as you know there are other ways to do this.
Here is some info on which drivers to use for ATTO or Adaptec cards:

If you're like us you'll find it invaluable !

Mastering Edition
Hi GWG,
Yes, of course. That is the whole purpose of the software. It gives you complete control over the output options.

Thanks for clarifying the
Thanks for clarifying the mastering edition question, Larry. Just so I'm clear on this, will the mastering edition handle this problem I'm encountering - getting content from a DVD-9 onto a pair of DLTs that I can send to a lab for replication?
Creating DLTs
Hi,
Yes, Mastering Edition is required to write (and read) DLTs. Please check out our special promotion in the Recent News section.
