Thanks, Larry. I tried both suggestions and both the DLTs wrote out Layers 0 and 1 OK and compared OK as well. I was surprised that I needed to initialize the Layer 1 tape though. Does this mean I should always keep a "pre-initialized" tape to use for the Layer 1 writing cycle?

Are you sure the second tape has been properly initialized? I would try writing to it as layer 0 and use the previous tape as layer 1. Then you might try turning off SCSI logging in the preferences, though that should make no difference.
Also you should try 3.0.3, the latest release, just so we are on the same page. Later tonight I will be doing some DLT testing (trying new ATTO drivers), and will look closer at your log at that time.

This isn't a problem with all DLT drives, but if it affects yours, then yes, it's a good idea to pre-initialise them. This is covered in the FAQ:
