Couple of simple (maybe stupid) questions

I'm sure this is answer somewhere on here but thought I'd post a couple of questions anyway.

1. When DVD-SP does a build it creates a .layout and .LAY file. Do I need to delete these files (I normally do) before using DVDAFterEdit to write DLTs

2. Enclosing Folder Name: When I write my builds to hard-drive I usually write them to a project name folder (on an external drive) which is in Upper and Lower. When I write the DLT I believe DVDAfterEdit uses the name of this folder. Does it convert it to Upper case with no gaps (as per the convention in DVD-SP - which I believe is the correct way that a DVD should be named for replication). Or doesn't it matter if it's Upper and lower when it is replicated.

Neither is a "biggie" question. Just things that have intrigued or perplexed me

Steve

Why bother...

I agree why bother as I have had discs that I am reauthoring with lower case names and spaces and ones where they adhere to the Uppercase and No spaces.

It just seems curious that Toast (and apparently Nero on a PC) plus DVD-SP and the like insist on the Uppercase. I guess it's the old backwards compatablity/erring on the side of caution.

I may be wrong about this,

I may be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure that Windows NT, and certainly 95 ( 98 first edition ? ) lack UDF support. Mind you I've never had DVD Playback in machines like that...

I heard somewhere that it

I heard somewhere that it was for DOS compatibility. So why bother.

Can you ever not have UDF support?

Great information. Thanks, Drew.

So if every modern OS that plays DVDs also supports UDF then it's perfectly fine to use upper/lower, spaces, etc etc.

Question: is there any modern OS that plays DVDs and doesn't support UDF? [Seems like every set top player should.]

And if the answer is "none" then:

Why does Toast (and Nero ROM for that matter) force ISO compliance?

Take a look at ISO discussion there

Naming conventions UPPERCASE

So no takers on my question as to why DVD-SP and Toast insist on UPPERCASE and no spaces as a naming convetion for DVDs?

Thought it did

Thanks for that Larry.

So what about the question of naming conventions. Why do programs like DVD-SP and Toast insist on Upper case if it isn't a requirement?

DVDAE ignores extraneous files

Hi,

DVDAE ignores any extraneous files in the VIDEO_TS folder.

-Larry

That's what i thought

Hi Michael

Thanks for your response:

1. Yes, I am the cautious type and routinely delete the extraneous files from the build folder. Just curious as to whether it's entirely necessary or does DVDAfterEdit ignore them. Just for those when you suddenly realise that you didn't dlete them and the DLT has gone to the replicators!!!!

2. I agree Upper and Lower looks much nicer but I'm sure I read recently somewhere (who knows where when one visits innumerable websites) that it was a requirement for DVDs to have Upper case names with no spaces to be fully "compliant" - not sure why this would be the case and have seen both DVDs with Uppercase only and some with Upper and lower. My curiosity was further peaked by the fact that if you use Toast to create a DVD from a VIDEO_TS it will take the folder name and change it to Upper case only. Why would it bother doing this if it wasn't necessary.

So is it a requirement or just accepted "practice".

some simple answers

1- When I have the ocassion to use Spruce I delete the .lay file before I make an image. I believe that like Spruce, DVD-SP (the grandchild of Spruce) uses this file when asked to make a disc image or write a tape. If you are using DVDAE for these purposes, this file is not necessary to keep around at all. If you are a "just in case" type then simply move it to a temporary location when formatting with DVDAE.

2- I use and prefer upper and lower case titles for my DVDs and I also use spaces. I've never had a problem - and it looks so much nicer on the desktop than ALL_UPPERCASE_WITH_UNDERSCORES. Other folks may have different opinions. I basically trust that DVDAE won't let me set the title to something that's illegal.

Hope this was helpful...

Michael
