Layer break hunting

Hi I have been looking at your program for a very long time now but i have managed to stick it out with DSP for DVD9 mastering but i find it problematic.

In short, when working on a project with lots of media, finding the region to stick a chapter marker for layer break is becoming more difficult, I don't know if DSP is getting more fussy in later versions as my mathmatics used to work and now it doesn't..... and it still displays the disc size incorrectly which isn't particularly reasuring..... i think its doing somthing strange.

so my qs are-

1, will this software show a "layer break ok zone" even if there is no markers in it
2, will i be able to add markers (although i could add them in DSP and rebuild)
3, will i be able to master largr projects - DSP tells me the project is too large even though the built files are arround 8gb

also
DSP 4.1 seems to refuse to burn a DL DVD+r or -r disc even though it will burn the dlts.
will i be able to use the software to burn check discs for my clients ?

lastly - re running two dlts at once, i have 4000 and a 7000. will this be ok or do i need two of the same?

best regards

alex

Hi Alex,To answer your

Hi Alex,

To answer your questions:

1, will this software show a "layer break ok zone" even if there is no markers in it

The way it works is:

You are given a choice of all valid locations. If there aren't any, you can select nearby markers ( cells ) and see how far away from the "zone" they are. There is also a graphical display where the selected cell is highlighted, to help. This should enable you to figure out where to put a new marker. I recommend you download the demo and try this out.

2, will i be able to add markers (although i could add them in DSP and rebuild)

Yes, but it's better to add them in DVDSP if possible. There are no known issues with adding them in DVDAE, and I've done it this way several times, but a few theoretical question marks remain.

3, will i be able to master largr projects - DSP tells me the project is too large even though the built files are arround 8gb

I have mastered a project that was within 200 MB of the theoretical maximum.

DSP 4.1 seems to refuse to burn a DL DVD+r or -r disc even though it will burn the dlts. will i be able to use the software to burn check discs for my clients ?

There is no disc-writing support in the current version, unfortunately. What most people do is write a disc image and the burn the discs with Toast. More info here.

lastly - re running two dlts at once, i have 4000 and a 7000. will this be ok or do i need two of the same?

If you have a dual-channel SCSI card, this will be fine. It should also work on a single-channel card, but this will be a matter of trial and error. Only ATTO SCSI cards are officially supported, but there are several other brands that will work. It's important to have the right drivers. Check out the links in this post.

Hope that's useful !

Cheers,

Ian
