Can AfterEdit fix DVDSP4 bug

In DVDSP if you create a DVD with a still image as the menu background, and use a simple overlay, there is a bug in how the menu will show up in Panther's DVD Player.
The following has been varified on at least 3 different systems.

Authored on Tiger (many versions) and DVDSP 4 on G4, G5, MacBookPro.
All menus authored with this usinsing a still (PICT, TIFF etc.) and an overlay will playback in DVDPlayer in Panther without it's background picture. The overlay will show up on mouseover, and the links will work.

Can and will DVDAfterEdit fix this problem? I'd like to use DVDSP4 to author my DVD's, but have to use DVDSP3 because it's more reliable.

Thanks,
Tal

Motion menus do work and are

Motion menus do work and are not effected with this issue. I'm doing a DVD with 80+ menus, so it's cumbersome and takes up space to do it that way.
I've sent Larry the files. I also tried Panthers DVD Player in Tiger and vise versa, but it will not launch in either.
Happy New Year!

I've seen this issue

I've seen this issue discussed on the Apple forums and afaik no-one has seen it anywhere else except the Panther player. However there are other, more serious problems with DVDSP 4's still menu implementation - please see this thread on the Apple boards:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3049147&#3049147

This bug means I can't recommend using DVDSP 4 on a project using still menus at this point. Apple are aware of the issue and have promised a fix, but whether it will materialise before NAB is hard to say.

It would be possible to fix these issues by replacing the menus using DVDAE, but this would involve building the menus in DVDSP 3 and importing them, which is no better than using DVDSP 3 throughout, unfortunately.

Of course there is always the workaround being used for the still menu fielding issue, namely to make each still menu a 30 second motion menu. Tal, does this problem occur with motion menus too ?

Please send Larry your small test projects with a DVDSP 3 and a DVDSP 4 build for comparison anyway though, because it woud be interesting to know what the differences are, especially if DVDSP 4's output is not spec compliant.

Cheers,

Ian

I'd like to use the new

I'd like to use the new features in DVDSP4, that's why I'm looking for a solution. I have a small test .IMG from DVDSP3/Panther and one from DVDSP4/Tiger if you want I can upload them. Let me know where. I'll try Panthers DVD Player in Tiger and vice vera if possible.
Thanks for your interest in this problem.

Can someone test Panther for me?

Hi Tal,

First, I apologize for my hasty remark. Certainly you are making the best choice for your present situation by using DVDSP 3. However the question remains, is the failure because DVDSP 4 creates a non spec-compliant menu, or is it because of a bug in the Panther player? Unfortunately I don't have a Panther system any longer, so perhaps someone will come to the rescue and run a test for us. Another possibility is to try running the Panther DVD player in Tiger, and if it works upload it where I can get it. (I can give you a link). Then I would need a small test DVD (VIDEO_TS folder) created by DVDSP 3.

Once we have a repeatable test situation we can use DVDAfterEdit to examine the menu settings and try changing them to see if it fixes the problem. Another thing you might try is changing the settings in DVDSP 4, for example set "Forced Display".

Soon Tiger will be replaced by Leopard. Already DVDSP 4 offers important features not found in DVDSP 3, such as VTS Menu allocation. So, while you can continue authoring in DVDSP 3 as long as you don't require those features, you will be working with an unsupported application.

There are many bugs in many DVD players, both software and hardware players. I hope we can resolve this one.

Regards,

Larry

This is a Panther only

This is a Panther only problem. Why would I need Panther if I have Tiger. Because somebody might be watching one of my DVD's in Panther. It happened a little while ago when a client called me and said "When I put the DVD in my computer all I see are lines." She was seeing the subpicture overlays but not the background image. It stumped me, but I still had a Panther partition and was able to replicate the problem on my end. I want to made DVD's that are as compatable as possible. If I made DVD's that can not be played in Panther that is a problem. Sure it's probably a small number of people but if there is a problem in Panther it may show up elseware. I have not seen it with other computers or set tops, so I really don"t know where the prblem lies.
When I auther in Panther & DVDSP3, it plays in Panther ok, so I feel I'm giving my client a better product. I'd just like to be able to author and run DLT's in DVDSP4 and Tiger and be comfortable giving my client a DLT.
Thanks,
Tal

Is this a Panther-only problem?

Hi Tal,

Does this problem show up ony in Panther or does it affect some set-top players as well? Why do you need Panther if you are authoring on Tiger?

Here is a post on a somewhat related problem, illustrating how work-arounds in DVDSP or DVDAfterEdit or both can be used if you can nail down what is wrong. Hope this is of some help.

Regards,

Larry
