X-Box 360 HD DVD update available

I don't exactly know why but it bugged me to see this item posted as "recent news" on this web site. Am I the only one who thinks it was rather off-topic?

Michael

Hi Michael,Thanks for your

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your comments. I see where you're coming from, but I only intend on posting "outsider" news when it directly impacts on authoring HD DVD - so, while drives are sparse, I will probably post about new burners as well, for example. Personally I already have a fistful of RSS feeds I keep an eye on, but I find it tedious sifting through all the "noise" out there. So, I think there'a a lot to be said for keeping a stream of relevant, focused information in one place, which is what I hope this site will become.

I have a "Getting started with HD DVD Advanced Content" article in the works, which will include lots of links to relevant information as you suggest, too.

Anyway, 'nuff said - you made another very interesting comment, which I've started a new thread on :-)

Ian

Thanks...

Ian -

I greatly appreciate the time and consideration of your reply.

I don't want to get into a big debate (and it's Larry's site, not mine) but I'm still not certain that I agree on the relevance of this kind of post here - leastways w/o adding some verbiage that links it to this community and it's interests more directly. There are plenty of sites that report this kind of news: maybe it would be more helpful to just have a page of links to those sites for the curious.

That being said, a blog detailing personal experiences and perspectives sounds like it would be interesting and unique and relvant. So I'm all for that kind of sharing.

And, as far as Advanced Content goes...just so you know, I think I'm more of a BD-J kind of guy. ;->

Hi Michael,I guess it

Hi Michael,

I guess it depends on your perspective ! I posted the information because in the near future HD DVD is going to become a central issue around here, but in my experience many people don't know much about the subject yet - some haven't even seen a disc playing yet. ( Not including you in that, obviously ! ) Getting an X-Box drive and hooking it up to a spare PC is a great, cost-effective way to explore what the format is capable of, rather than paying hundreds of dollars for a Toshiba set-top. It's quite an eye-opener, as I'm sure you know, especially Advanced Content ( pop-up menus, picture-in-picture, downloadable content etc ) - and currently it's an easy way for us to test discs we are working on. All of which will become even more relevant when HDAE goes into beta-testing later this year.

Larry wants the News section to be much more active from here on in, rather than simply restricted to DVDAE, so I also plan to blog about getting started in HD DVD, useful sites and resources, and probably Blu-related issues, too. Eventually it will all migrate over to the new HDAE site, but for the time being I hope it will be interesting to current users who haven't yet ventured into HD DVD, and also new visitors who are more interested in HDAE than the current version.

Does any of that help ?

Ian
