Malformed .DS_Store files through DVD AE

We use OSX to "Pretty Up" the folder backgrounds on a lot of the interactive titles we produce (UDF DVDs with an Audio_TS and a Video_TS plus an additional ROM zone). These titles are created when we create a DVD-sized .dmg file and drop the _TS folders and the interactive files into the .dmg, which is then burned as a UDF volume.

We also change the icon from the standard .dmg icon to something more interesting. When we do, the .Volumeicon.icns file is updated, and it keeps the new volume icon with the .dmg. If we burn this image to a DVD-R, the DVD-R will appear on the desktop with the appropriate icon. If we create an image with DVD-AE, however, the icon reverts to the default "DVD Volume Icon."

It seems that even though the .Volumeicon.icns is correctly copied from my .dmg file to the DVD-AE's .img file (I can open it in Preview), the .DS_Store file's reference to the .Volumeicon.icns file has been obliterated from the .DS_Store file. Surprisingly, the background image is listed, but not the Volume Icon reference. See below:

Before DVD-AE:

Bud1
ol.fwi.ICVObool.fwi0blob, icnv.fwswlongñ.fwvhshor.icgoblob
.DS_StoreIlocblobZ!
.Spotlight-V100IlocblobY
.TrashesIlocblob!
.VolumeIcon.icnsIlocblobZ}
AUDIO_TSIlocblobSo
BGND.jpgIlocblobøl
Desktop DBIlocblob}
Desktop DFIlocblobZY
VIDEO_TSIlocblob/o
@A @A @A @E
DSDB 'A @A @A @

After DVD-AE:

Bud1
ol.fwi.ICVObool.fwi0blob, icnv.fwswlongñ.fwvhshor.icgoblob
AUDIO_TSIlocblobSo
BGND.jpgIlocblobøl
VIDEO_TSIlocblob/o

DSDB 'A @A @A @

Is there a way to force DVD-AE to pass through the values of the .DS_Store file from the source folder to the destination .img (and CMF)? If not, we need a solution to this issue pretty quickly.

No, lack of test material is a problem

Hi Craig,

The file names you listed in the original post look funny to me, not anything like I've seen before, particularly the comma and close bracket. Did you copy these from the finder?

So to do a proper test, I would need your input data. If you could make a small test project and upload it somewhere, I will take a look. But have you tried building it with HDAfterEdit, after dragging the appropriate files back into the disc window? It will be much easier for us to troubleshoot with HDAE.

Regards,

Larry

Have you been able to

Have you been able to reproduce this issue by trying it out?

It really is the .DS_Store file

Thanks Larry and Ian for responding so quickly.

The answer to both of you is "yes," "yes," "yes," "yes," "yes," "yes" and "yes." ;-)

That is, we are checking Include Macintosh ROM Data and Log UDF Bridge. The target format can be either DVD Image or Tape Image - it doesn't matter, as the results are the same. What we specifically observe is that the .DS_Store file is not copied to the target; it is rewritten with certain chunks of data omitted.

We have written DVD-Rs from DVDAE-generated .img files and we have replicated media from DVDAE-generated DDP files (Tape Images). Both scenarios produce the same result: malformed .DS_Store files that were once properly formatted in the source directory.

Please check the log file

Hi Craig,

Did you make sure to check "Include Macintosh ROM Data" in the Format/Copy dialog, and to make sure that your preference for "Log UDF Bridge" is set? (The ISO settings are immaterial, since it is not capable of handling the full UDF character set).

Then when you build the image you should see all of the files that were exclused deliberately, if any, by DVDAE, and the resulting UDF directory, including all hidden files. Beside observing the log in the log window when DVDAE is open, it is saved as a text file in your user library preferences, by date and time.

If you are not replicating (yet), but are only concerned with the .dmg file to be burned, you could create the .dmg file with HDAfterEdit. The current Alpha version strips out all hidden files, but you could drag them back into the disc window using drag and drop from the finder, then build the .dmg file.

Our primary development focus for HDAE is exactly this and similar issues, and we expect to have more user-friendly solutions in place soon.

Please let us know what you discover.

Regards,

Larry

Hi Craig, I'm afraid I don't

Hi Craig,

I'm afraid I don't know the direct answer to your question, maybe Larry will chime in, but in the meantime, you say you are converting the dmg to an "image" with DVDAE - do you mean a DDP image, ie. "Tape Image" ? If not, please try using this format ( which is the one you'll need for replication purposes ) and try again. If you are already using a DDP/Tape image, please try renaming the file MAIN.DAT to MAIN.img. You will then be able to double-click on the file to mount it as a disk image. Do you see the same issue when you look at the .DS_Store files on this ? I just want to rule out any quirks in the restore process. Do the written images pass verification ?

Ian
