Understanding 'Return' function and return types...

Greetings to everyone still making DVDs!

I've come across an odd little behavior quirk involving the oppo 981HD player and the Return key on the remote. What I've noticed is that when I Title or Menu out of a program on this player, I cannot use the Title or Menu keys to resume play. Instead I appear to need to use the Return key (?). Now what's really odd is that in the course of testing a new DVD I'm working on, hitting the Return key (after Title or Menu) is returning me to the feature I was watching but with a different (*wrong*) subtitle stream selected than when I left it. In fact, it's a stream I've never selected, ever since inserting the disc.

I am at something of a loss to explain this behavior - and how to prevent it. On most players it's sufficient to press Title or Menu to resume a program and none of these players exhibit the behavior of the oppo.

Now, in the authoring tool I am using for this project there's a drop down list of "Return Type" settings for a a given PGC. The list of types is:

None
Parent
Resume
Other PGC...

By default, I get "Parent." Perhaps I hould I be using another type (e.g. Resume)?

Thanks in advance...

Michael

P.S. I bet Trai could answer this in his sleep. ;->

Not changing streams in VMGM

Trai

Can't access the stream setting commands using any non-abstraction authoring tool - as it should be. ;->

Needs to be VTSM or Title Domain

Hi Michael,

Not sure if you're trying to, but just so you know, it's against the DVD Specifications to set streams from the Video Manager Domain. Notice, DVDAfterEdit doesn't allow the set stream command from within the VMG.

Take care,

Trai

Thanks!

Thanks Trai. I'll let you know what I wind up doing.

One note: this is actually happening out of VMGM, not VTSM.

The GoUp PGC would need a LinkResume command

Hi Michael,

Yes, it would be good to set the GoUp (return) PGC for your menu to a dummy PGC with a LinkResume command. But be sure to have the same amount of subtitle streams in the VTSM 'System Space' where all this is going on, as lots of players will 'unload' the subtitle stream settings if navigation leaves a VTS with subtitles and then enters a VTS with no subtitles (or fewer subtitle streams than the one that may have been previously playing). In fact, the MEI DVD-Video verifier will return an error if you set a command to turn on subtitles in a menu domain in a VTS without them.

.... (yawn,..rubbing eyes)...Hey, what time is it? :-)

Take care,

Trai
