Region Mask Refresher Sought...

Folks -

A DVD Author friend of mine recently forwarded me a link to this article by Ian Shepard:

http://www.tfdvdedit.com/public/91.cfm

It's copyrighted from 2003 - a ways back now.

Can someone refresh my memory about "current best practices" for setting region bits? Have things changed in 'Edit since Ian's article or is it still correct.

Thanks!

Michael

Hi Michael,

The only thing I've discovered is that Eclipse can complain if region 7, which does not exist, is not zero (enabled). This may depend on the version of Eclipse - many replicators are running with very old Eclipse software, and I don't know which version rejected a client's DLT because of this problem. So now our program omits region 7 from the user interface, and always sets it to zero. Some (most?) authoring packages do not do this. I do not do much authoring (I am too busy programming), so others should jump in here.

Regards,

Larry

Larry -

Thanks for the info.

Seems like that article might need some updating for 3.0. I also note that version 2.0.5 shows Region 7 in the UI.

Sonic Fusion/Creator users - like myself - are used to seeing Region 8 (Airlines/Ships) disabled even on "All Regions" projects. Sonic's UI doesn't allow us to change this bit which will always be 1 when we output a project. [It also doesn't allow us to change Region 7 which is always set to 0 on output.] I've never seen a reason to clear the bit for Region 8 in 'Edit since (thus far) it doesn't seem to cause any problems with mastering verifiers nor with clients.

Not if you're using DLT, no. On DVD+/-R, you want to clear it, as the article says. ( You're right, it will need updating slightly by the time version 3 is final. )
