Hi,
I hoping someone has some wisdom in this area please.
We are about to take on work for a new client that will result in 10's of thousands of DVDs being replicated from our masters.
To date we haven't had any jobs resulting in more than 2000 discs.
Our normal QC consists of burnt DVD-R and a sheet listing properties of the DVD, navigation etc. with three tick box columns, one for the authoring engineer, one for a second QC engineer and the last for the client - the sheet requires the client to sign to say that everything is as expected and indemnifies us from errors missed in the QC.
From initial meetings it appears this new client is expecting all QC to be done by us and we'd need to supply a warranty of work. Ultimately should something be missed in the QC we could be financially responsible for product recall and re-manufacture - which could kill our little company with the first instance.
I was wondering how others deal with this?
Is is standard to have some insurance to cover this?
Or is it standard practice to not offer a warranty as we have in the past?
I'd greatly appreciate any guidance or opinion on this.
Howard
Testing...
The best you can do is to ensure that the client does not replicate thousands of flawed discs (for which you could be liable). So the first thing you need to do is to be sure the client is getting a check disc from the replication facility to review, test and approve before performing the actual run and that you get a copy of it. If they are NOT doing this, insist that they do.
Second, find a reputable testing lab and have them evaluate the test disc before replication. That's what the studios do to ensure maximum compatibility. You should be able to pass this cost back to the client. Short of that you should buy (if you don't already have) a pile of new and used DVD players (variety of makes/models) plus the two or three most common PC software player apps plus OSX DVD Player and test the snot out of the check disc. In either case, if you don't find any problems you should be good. If you do find a problem, the most you are out is the cost of a new glass master.
Doing your own QC at this level of detail assumes you know what sorts of things can cause player compatibilities and whether or not you've done any of those things on the disc in question. It also assumes you know the difference between things which simply don't work on a given player (or which work differently) and things which are caused by bugs/errors in a disc and may be corrected.
Good luck...
Michael
