I'm looking to purchase DVDafterEdit, and want to know if the non-mastering version is OK for me if I'm not planning on doing DLT. I just want to burn gold masters to do replication with.
Sorry for the stupid question. I'm a total newbie to all this.
Replication vs. Duplication
Hi Darin,
The difference between Mastering Edition and Standard is replication vs. duplication. Replication is when you create a special format, called DDP or CMF, to send to a replication house where they make a glass master from which thousands of copies can be made.
Duplication is where you make a final DVD and then use it to copy up to perhaps a few hundred by burning them to recordable media (DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD+R, or DVD+R DL).
In the early days most authors submitted their DDP masters on DLT, but today most authoring houses accept DDP on hard drive or burned to recordables, or even will replicate from a final DVD, though that is just asking for trouble because hardware errors can get through and cause failures.
Also DVD players do better from replicated discs than from recordables, but most of the early horrible players are out of circulation by now.
Hope this helps,
Larry
